Liu Kuo Sung in “Longing for Nature: Reading Landscapes in Chinese Art”

The exhibition introduces viewers to Chinese landscape painting, discloses its many meanings, and reveals its hidden messages. It provides insight into China’s culture, philosophy, and literature, while at the same time addressing a highly topical issue that transcends national boundaries, namely the relationship between humankind and nature.

For the first time an exhibition juxtaposes historical masterpieces with landscape representations by internationally renowned modern and contemporary artists. The dialogue between past and present reveals surprising links, but also ruptures and conflicts.

The show presents over eighty works from six centuries, including paintings, installations, and video works. In addition to highlights from the Drenowatz Collection of the Museum Rietberg, the exhibition also features important loans from leading European museums and rarely exhibited works from private holdings.

Among the exhibited works is Liu Kuo-sung's "Snow,", painted by 1996, which is featured in the "Lofty Antiquity" exhibition section. This artwork is also selected as the cover for the exhibition catalog.
