Liu Kuo-sung’s Artwork Exhibited in “Thrust: Convergence and Expansion of the São Paulo Art Biennial through the NMH Collection” at the National Museum of History

April 14, 2026

On April 14, 2026 Liu Kuo-sung gave a speech at the Opening Ceremony of this NMH-curated exhibition, at the core of which are works from the Museum’s collection, with valuable archival documents, which were shown in São Paulo Art Biennials, tracing how the participation of Taiwanese artists at these events was a significant stepping stone on their way to an international art platform in the period between 1957 and 1973.

Among the many works in the collection, NHM has selected from Liu Kuo-sung’s oeuvre Spring has Arrived (1969), which is similar in style and composition to works he exhibited at the 1969 São Paulo Art Biennial: Lantern Festival, now in the Take A Step Back Collection, Hong Kong; Which is Earth? II, now in the collection of the National Gallery Singapore; and Which is Earth? III, now in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung. All these works show how the artist responded to the contemporary pulse, changing styles through his creative experience, and concretely express newly-developed facets of Taiwan’s modern art.
